What is a hazardous household waste?

A product whose use or disposal may be a danger to the health of humans or the environment is labeled as a household hazardous product. On average, a home can have 100 to 200 household hazardous products. Many times, these products will be labeled with the words DANGER, POISON, WARNING, or CAUTION. Other words on labels of household produts that should send up a red flag are TOXIC, FLAMMABLE, CORROSIVE, and EXPLOSIVE.

Some tips on safe use of Household Hazardous Waste are:

* Keep leftover product in original containers and store in a safe, dry place away from heat or flames
* Keep containers dry to prevent corrosion. If the container starts to corrode, place it in a plastic bucket with a tight fitting lid, then pack with clay-based kitty litter.
* Keep labels intact.
* Do not use pesticides over ten years old because they may be banned.
* Think about what you are buying and if you really need it. Buy the minimum amount required to finish what you are doing and read labels to find a less hazardous substitute for the product. Share unused portions instead of dumping them. Also, do not burn or buy the products or their containers.
